The Weather

How about never having to shovel snow ever again? When it rains, it pours, but it usually is for a very short time in between periods of sunshine. Even during the rainy season, when it rains more than usual, we usually have sunny periods. You may need a very light sweater or long sleeved T-shirt for a couple of days during the winter, when the temperature goes down to a "chilly" 75 degrees, accustomed as you become to temperatures in the high 80s.

Casual Dress Code

Casual is the dress code on the islands, but we do have a couple of events where people dress up for the occasion. T-shirt, shorts and flip flops or sandals are all you need year-round! Although pants for evenings out are a good idea to protect from mosquitoes on certain nights...

The Beauty of the Place

The landscapes are breathtaking. The island is luxuriant with vegetation. There are many hills where you can see the ocean, the beaches and the coral reef. The are many kinds of palm trees, flowers and various plants including medicinal plants. There is a strong tradition of natural healing among the natives. In many places, you will be able to find artifacts, mostly in the form of pottery pieces. There are several beautiful coves. There are many caves and you can explore some with a special tour. Anywhere you go, the sights are pricless!

The Relative Freedom

Living in a society that is more or less organized menas less regulation, therefore more freedom.

The Opportunities

  • Some businesses can be bought for a very low price
  • The islands are in need of almost everything, so there are a lot of opportunities for the truly entrepreneurial spirit (also see the challenges in the Reality Check section)
  • A house can be built for a very reasonable price
  • There is room for a lot of development
  • This being a third world country, it is a place where you can really make a difference!

The People

Most natives are very gentle and kind people. They have a great smile and many go out of their way to help you. There are many interesting and colorful stories that they will tell you. If you want to have an idea about the culture found on Roatan, read The Judas Bird, A Modern Treasure Tale, a novel by David K. Evans. For more books about the islands, please see our Showcase section.
